Facts About CERVICAL CANCER:
- CERVICAL CANCER IS THE MOST COMMON CANCER IN INDIA.
- India accounts for 1/3rd of the global cervical cancer deaths worldwide, that is about 122,844 cases of cervical cancer annually.
- The age-adjusted incidence rate of cervical cancer varies widely among registries; highest is 23.07/100,000 in Mizoram state and the lowest is 4.91/100,000 in Dibrugarh district.
- All women are at risk for cervical cancer.
Long-lasting infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer.
Risk factors for cervical cancer:
- HPV : Most common, many cases resolve spontaneously, few progress to cervical cancer.
- Coexisting STD, HIV
- Early age at sexual intercourse(<18 yrs)
- Promiscuity, having intercourse with a partner who is promiscuous
- Smoking
- Use of birth control pills for a long time.
- Diet poor in fruits and vegetables
- Family history
Prevention:
- UNIVERSAL SCREENING- routine pap smear for all sexually active ladies. Conventional pap smear needs to be repeated every 3years. Liquid pap smear with HPV every 5 years.
- Safe sexual practices
- Quit smoking
- Get vaccinated(also prevents genital warts)
